20 Outfit Ideas for Tokyo Disney

Helen Foster

If you’re trying to decide what to wear to Tokyo Disneyland or DisneySea, why not have a little fun? Here are 20 outfits inspired by the characters that won’t take up too much space in your case, as you can wear the components elsewhere on your trip.

1. Minnie Mouse

Get a cute black top and a full red skirt with white dots – the bigger, the better. Add some black tights if you’re visiting in a cooler season, don your comfiest yellow shoes – and, of course, top it off with some bow-topped Minnie Ears.

If you want to buy some ears in advance, you can find some unique designs here.

I would totally wear this – although I’d advise against those shoes – they’re a recipe for a blister!

And, in the spirit of total honesty, I created most of these images with AI – mostly because I don’t have 20 different Disney outfits in my wardrobe, nor do I have a nearby Disney park to model them in if I did!

But I’m now inspired to at least get myself one outfit for my next trip… watch this space.

2. Mickey Mouse

You can go literal with Mickey and copy his cute shorts and tails outfit, or just hint at your inspiration with a look like the one below.

You’ll need a short black jacket, a white t-shirt or shirt, red shorts or trousers (depending on the season), black tights if you’re wearing shorts, yellow shoes – and again, top things off with some Mickey ears.

3. Donald Duck

I love this picture of two girls in their Donald-inspired outfits, which I took at Tokyo Disneyland a few trips back.

Two women in matching outfits inspired by Donald Duck at Tokyo Disneyland. They have white hats with Donald's feet on them, blue and white stripy shirts and long white skirts

Find a blue and white top, a white skirt, yellow tights and black shoes. The hats make the look – I love the little tail on the back.

Of course, you can go one step further and make your top a proper sailor’s one – but these pretty striped shirts are probably more practical to use at another point in your trip.

4. Daisy Duck

I have no idea how she puts up with Donald’s histrionics, but at least she does it in style!

Channel the World’s best-dressed duck girlfriend with a lavender or purple top with puff sleeves, a white skater skirt or shorts (see our guide on planning your Disney outfit as to why short, flippy skirts might not be the best choice without anything underneath them), a pink bow, yellow tights and pink shoes.

5. Goofy

You’ve got to be a fan of bold colours to pull this one off but grab yourself an orange turtleneck, some loose, long blue pants, a brown waistcoat and a green hat, and you’re good to go.

Accessorise with a Goofy ears headband from the park as a finishing touch – or try some plaits if you have the hair for it – and if I hadn’t already confessed my use of AI here, those plaits would give it away!

6. Rapunzel

I followed this girl around Fantasy Springs when I was there on Halloween, and I was obsessed with her plait. It must have been so heavy.

Disney rules mean you can’t dress in full character costume outside of Halloween, so if you’re visiting on a normal day, you might have to leave the 5kg of extra hair at home, but a cute long pink or lilac dress will give the same vibes.

You could pick up a shoulder pal of Pascal, the chameleon, to finish off your look. If you don’t want to risk Tokyo Disney not having them in stock at the time of your visit, you might find them (and some other shoulder pals) on Amazon.

7. Elsa

While we’re in our Princess with plaits era, Elsa makes a good outfit for shoulder weather like spring or autumn.

Combine a white polo neck with a long v-necked turquoise dress. Or, if the temperature is variable, use a white shrug instead of a polo.

Don’t forget your icy white trainers – Arendelle in Fantasy Springs is a long walk from the gate!

8. Anna

She’s a bit harder to do than Elsa unless you carry a corset and a cape on your holidays, but you can get an Anna feel by mixing up your colours.

Get a long-sleeved pale blue skinny rib and wear it with a long cobalt blue skirt and brown walking boots or trainers. Then, add Anna’s signature magenta cape in the form of a cardigan.

If you want to really finish the outfit off, get yourself a large Olaf plush from one of the stores in the park (or bring a small one with you from home). It’s quite common to see people in Tokyo Disney with character toys.

9. Winnie the Pooh

I’m also a big fan of this look! And if you eat too many cute Disney snacks and get a little poochy belly with it, you’re just in character, so it’s a win for everyone!

You just need a mustard-coloured dress, or a top, trousers, shorts, and a red waistcoat. Top it off with some Pooh-bear ears.

If you can’t find Pooh-goodies in the Main Street shops, Pooh Corner in Fantasyland is a good place to look for them.

Don’t Forget to Buy Your Disney Tickets

If you’re within two months of your trip, why not order them now so it’s done? Unlike the Disney site, Klook takes all foreign credit cards. Plus, if you’re buying other tours or tickets, add the code JAPLANEASEKLOOK at checkout and you could save up to 10 per cent.

T&Cs apply; Tokyo Disney tickets and USJ tickets are not available for discounts.

10. Jasmine

This was one of the hardest looks to get right with normal clothes. Because people don’t normally flash much flesh above the waist in Japan, Jasmine’s off-the-shoulder bra top was out, but it turns out the key point is not to forget the headband!

Once you’ve got that, any light blue loose long pants and a top with a sweetheart neckline give that Whole New World feeling.

A fun touch would be to add a bag made from kilim-rug-style fabric to carry your essentials. There’s a few companies selling these online, or check your local handicrafts market to see if you can strike gold.

If it’s cooler bring a wrap to wear around your shoulders – it gets cool in Disney at night.

11. Aladdin

Well, we’ve got Jasmine, so why not do Aladdin (after all, it’s easier than colouring yourself blue to do Genie).

Aladdin is a mass of clashing colours – so you need a tan T-shirt, a red cummerbund and white or cream pants. Top it all off with a bright purple jacket, cardigan or waistcoat.

Then, head toward the Arabian Coast area of DisneySea as soon as the park opens to have all the photos in the perfect backdrop.

12. Snow White

Grab your block colours, and your Snow White outfit is sorted. Her colour scheme is so distinctive that it’s easy to copy.

You just need a bright blue top, a long floaty yellow skirt and a red bow or headband in your hair. Easy.

Training bluebirds to fly around your head is an optional extra.

13. Maleficent

When I was at Disney on Halloween, I saw a woman in the most fantastic Maleficent outfit – it was a tight leather dress, cape and full-sized horns – and the best thing about this was she was 65 if she was a day. I loved her.

You might not want to go that far, but the secret to getting Maleficent attitude in regular clothes is proportion. You need a long black cardigan or jacket to swish around (purple lining and collar optional). Then add a touch of purple, like a purple top. Wear a black skirt or pair of trousers, and you’re done.

The horns might be a bit trickier to get. I saw many people wearing them in Tokyo Disney at Halloween, but I think they were from a few years ago, as I couldn’t find them anywhere (there is something similar on Amazon though).

I have seen a pair of black leather Mickey ears with studs on my last few visits, though – and they’d set it off nicely! Or these sequinned ears with horns are also fabulous if you don’t mind carrying some with you.

14. Gaston

You don’t need to be especially good at expectorating to pull off a Gaston-inspired look.

Just get some black shorts, a yellow coloured shirt, a red cardigan and a black belt to pull the whole thing together.

Knee-high boots might not be the best footwear for the park – but it is a look that goes with hiking boots if you’re packing yours! Or, just pop on your trainers.

15. Ariel

Again, the inability to base the look around a shell bra made Ariel’s look hard to get right – but, her colour scheme is pretty distinctive, so that does help – especially if you’re lucky enough to have red hair to top off your look.

When I was playing around with the pictures, I found that having a skirt with a sheen, like one made of satin added more of a mermaid feel (especially if you can find or make one with a fishtail like the one above) – and don’t forget a seashell necklace of some kind.

The good news is you’ll find a lot of Ariel accessories and Flounder toys in the park – especially around the Mermaid Lagoon area in DisneySea, so you can accessorise with whozits, whatzits and thingamibobs galore when you get there!

16. Belle

As tempted as I was to try and work out how you could pack a bright yellow ballgown, I needed to be practical, so let’s go with Belle’s day outfit.

You just need a long-sleeved white skinny top and a blue pinafore. Tie your hair back with a matching bow and add some white plimsolls, and you’re done.

Carrying a book is optional – but would give you something to do in the very long queue for the Enchanted Tale of Beauty and the Beast if you don’t get a Premiere Access pass!

17. Woody

I used to have the perfect waistcoat to finish off this look about 25 years ago – and now I shall stop revealing my age and explain how to make a Woody look work.

You need a yellow checked shirt, a pair of jeans and a brown belt. If you want to go one step further, add a fake fur cowhide waistcoat (they have some on Amazon) but, remember, we’re trying to keep the packing down!

A cowboy hat can also add an extra touch but you might not want to carry that, so check to see what Toy Story hats they have in the park.

18. Duffy, the Bear

He is HUGE in Japan, especially at DisneySea, so you might want to theme your Tokyo DisneySea outfit on Mickey’s sailor bear.

Admittedly, it’s probably not advised to walk around the park wearing just a sailor top and a little hat as he does, so avoid arrest by basing our look around a teddy-bear brown top and trousers, skirts or shorts.

Tie a blue and white scarf or bandana around your neck – or drape a Breton-style knit over your shoulders. Top the look off with a sailor’s hat.

19. Gelatoni

Like Duffy and most of the other members of his entourage, Gelatoni the cat technically doesn’t wear clothes – just a jaunty little hat, but the fact that she’s green does at least give us something to play with.

So, get yourself some sage green trousers and a sage green cardigan (or even better a jumpsuit) and wear a white t-shirt underneath to represent the fluffy white patch under her chin.

Top it off with chunky white trainers to represent her paw socks and a green beret! You’ll also be able to buy cat’s ears at one of the Duffy and Friend’s shops at DisneySea.

20. Stella Lou

Another of Duffy’s friends – she does get some cute accessories, although her fluffy butt-bearing skirt might be a bit short for the Disney decency police, so either go a bit longer – or wear some very thick tights!

So, you need a white T-shirt, a cropped lilac cardigan and a sky blue skirt. Add some pink trainers – Stella Lou’s ballet shoes will lead to blisters after 10 minutes! And tie your hair up with a blue scrunchie.

Obviously, there are hundreds of other characters you can use to inspire your outfits, but we’ll be here all day, so I’m going to stop there. If you try any of the above, or, if you have other ideas or pictures of your bounding outfits in other parks, let me see them over at my Tokyo Disney Japan group on Facebook.
