Tucked into the Japanese Alps, Takayama feels like stepping into a woodblock print – narrow streets lined with dark timber merchant houses, sake breweries marked by cedar balls hanging over their doors, and mountains framing pretty much every view. It’s one of those towns where wandering aimlessly is honestly the best strategy.
It’s also a brilliant base for exploring the wider Hida region, including the famous thatched-roof village of Shirakawa-go and unique Hida Furukawa where koi carp swim lazily down the road!
With a noticeably slower pace than Tokyo or Osaka, especially when the day trippers go home, Takayama is a great palate cleanser if you’ve been bouncing between big cities.
